Visits Orang Asli Village
Leo Club Supports Orang Asli Village for Community Development
In line with Raffles University’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—particularly SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation and SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities—our Leo Club students recently took part in a meaningful community development initiative at Kampung Orang Asli Tanah Gembor, Block C Bekoh, Tangkak, Johor.
This initiative was part of a wider outreach programme supported by The Lions Club of Johor Jaya, which also sponsors the Leo Club of Raffles University, a student-led social-cultural club focused on service and volunteerism. Through this collaboration, students had the opportunity to engage directly with on-site activities that aim to improve essential infrastructure within the village.
Real-World Learning Through Community Engagement
During the visit, students observed ongoing efforts to enhance the village’s water infrastructure, including a water catchment area, new pipelines, and the installation of additional water tanks near existing systems. They also visited the community hall kitchen and fencing, helping to identify areas in need of further maintenance and support.
This hands-on experience allowed students to better understand the challenges faced by rural communities and explore how sustainable solutions can be developed in partnership with local stakeholders.
As part of its contribution to the initiative, Raffles University pledged RM3,500.00 to support the enhancement of water piping systems and public kitchen facilities in the village. Combined with funds raised through the Lions and Leo Club efforts, this financial support aims to improve daily living conditions and promote the health and well-being of the local community.
