DVC STUDENT COMPLETED HER INTERNSHIP AT Why Design

Raffles Student Name:  TAN Yi Mun
Programme: Diploma In Visual Communication
Internship Semester: Jan 2024

1. What is your designation and the name of your company (or industry) for your internship?

During my internship at Whys Design in Setia Indah, I am involved in creating brand impressions for every project. My role primarily focuses on graphic design, with a particular emphasis on crafting social media posts. Whys Design specialises in developing brand identities for various projects, ensuring each one leaves a lasting impression.

2. Can you share a specific project or achievement that you worked on in the internship company?

I recently completed a web design project for a beer company, which was a new experience for me, especially in terms of UI/UX. The goal of this project was to redesign their existing website to give it a fresh look and enhance user-friendliness. It took around a month to complete, during which I created four categories of pages for both mobile and desktop layouts. Throughout the project, I received a lot of support from others and learned a great deal. I discovered that even the smallest details, such as spacing or button sizes, can significantly impact the user experience of a website.

3. How do you think your graphic design internship has influenced your approach to design?

While Raffles provided a detailed learning experience, my time at the company has focused on acquiring skills that facilitate faster progress. The environment has encouraged me to develop efficiency in completing tasks within shorter timeframes. This practical experience has been invaluable, complementing the theoretical knowledge gained at university.

4. What skills or techniques from your academic studies did you find most valuable during your internship?

I found the publication course and the Adobe app skills to be particularly valuable. The publication course enhanced my abilities in layout arrangement, allowing me to refine my skills in organising visual elements effectively. As for the Adobe app skills, they have become deeply ingrained in my memory. Working extensively with Adobe applications during my internship has not only strengthened my proficiency in these tools but also expanded my understanding of their capabilities and versatility.

5. How does your internship experience help clarify your career goals or interests in graphic design?

During my internship, I primarily focused on creating social media posts. However, I discovered that this aspect of the job didn’t fully capture my interest. I found that social media posts tend to follow a similar pattern, limiting the opportunity for exploration into other areas. This experience made me realise that I want to explore more diverse aspects of design that offer greater potential for growth and exploration in my future career.

6. What knowledge or soft skills that you learned at RU contributed to your internship?

The soft skills I gained in Photoshop (PS) and Illustrator (AI) have been the most significant contributions to my internship. These two applications have been essential in not only enhancing my projects but also leaving a positive impression. Additionally, mastering these tools has allowed me to elevate the quality of my work, making each project more polished and refined.

6. Could you share some insights with juniors who are preparing for their upcoming internships?

In reality, everyone encounters various situations, but maintaining a strong work ethic and completing projects on time is crucial. It’s important to be proactive and confident in showcasing your artwork or skills to increase your chances of success. By being proactive and demonstrating your abilities, you create better opportunities for yourself. Whether it’s through presenting your portfolio or taking on challenging tasks, being proactive can lead to more favorable outcomes in your career.

7. What is your future plan?

Looking ahead, my future plan involves delving deeper into self-discovery to identify my true interests and passions within the field of design. I aim to immerse myself in new experiences at a different company, where I can expand my skill set to its fullest potential. Additionally, I aspire to pursue another degree certificate, provided I have the patience and dedication to engage in further study. This journey will not only enhance my knowledge but also allow me to achieve greater mastery in my chosen field.
