MIID annual event
Celebrating Local Heritage in Interior Design
On October 19, a group of Bachelor of Interior Design(Honours) and Diploma in Interior Design students from Raffles University joined the MIID Students’ Saturday at Taylor’s University. This annual event, spearheaded by our Raffles lecturers: Ahmad Faiz Hassan Naziri and Ms Lim Su Ching, is a central gathering for Interior Design students across Malaysia. Beyond competitions, the event celebrates Malaysia’s rich heritage and encourages students to learn from industry leaders, network with peers, and explore new creative perspectives under the “Sapot Lokal.”
“Sapot Lokal” invited Interior Design students to immerse themselves in Malaysian culture, drawing from local resources, traditional crafts, and community values. Through workshops, hands-on activities, and talks by experienced designers, participants gained fresh insights into using sustainable materials and integrating cultural elements in design. The event fostered a sense of unity and pride among students, giving them tools to shape a meaningful, locally inspired approach to their future work.
Raffles University students made the most of this opportunity, participating in various activities and showcasing their unique talents and perspectives. Their hard work and creativity were rewarded with the following competition achievements:
GRAFITTI (Intervarsity) – 1st Place
FUN(K)TIONAL MATCH (Intervarsity) – 1st Place
Furniture Design – 3rd Place
HIKAYAT – Top 10
These accomplishments reflect the dedication and talent of our Raffles students, who skillfully blended traditional Malaysian aesthetics with contemporary design principles. In the GRAFITTI (Intervarsity) and FUN(K)TIONAL MATCH (Intervarsity) categories, students created works that balanced cultural inspiration with functionality, truly capturing the “Sapot Lokal” spirit. The awards are a testament to the student’s commitment to creating designs that honour both heritage and innovation. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to our interior design students for their exceptional achievements. Their wins not only honour Raffles University but also embody the collaborative spirit of Malaysia’s design community.
