Celebrating Diversity: Raffles University Cultural Day 2023

Raffles University are delighted to share the highlight of cultures that came alive at Raffles University Cultural Day 2023. This remarkable event was a celebration of multiculturalism, uniting our Raffles community through cultural performances, delicious food items, and creative costume activities.

Raffles University’s commitment to fostering cultural diversity within our community was front and center, creating an inclusive and harmonious atmosphere that values the rich tapestry of cultures represented among our students and staff. This was achieved through the active involvement of the academic team, staff, and students in each session of the activities. We believe that the harmonious atmosphere must start from the academic team and staff, and then be passed on to the next generation, contributing to society.

The heart and soul of Cultural Day were the mesmerising cultural performances that took us on a journey through the traditions of Malay, Chinese, and Indian cultures. These performances brought to life the essence of our multicultural society, highlighting the beauty and diversity that make Malaysia truly unique.

The event also recognised individuals who put exceptional effort into their attire to represent the cultures they cherish. The heart of the event lay in the outstanding performances that captivated the audience’s attention. The winners of the Best Performances category left an indelible mark on Cultural Day 2023. A true highlight of the day was the Costume Contest, where participants showcased their creativity and cultural pride. Congratulations to the winners of the Best Malay Costume, Best Chinese Costume, and Best Indian Costume categories! Your exceptional costumes truly shone brightly and added to the colourful atmosphere of the event.

The event featured performances from the Johor Youth Development Centre, Perfect Pitch Piano Studio, Vettaikary Tappu Melam JB, and a host of other talented individuals and groups from Raffles University . The event was graced by external performances that added a unique flavor to the celebration. Unit Tari JOYDEC BATU PAHAT, led by Mr. Fauzzan, brought the essence of Malaysia’s multicultural society to life through four mesmerizing cross-cultural dances. These dances spanned the Malay, Chinese, Indian, and Sabah Sarawak cultural traditions, showcasing the diversity that makes Malaysia truly unique.

Perfect Pitch Piano Studio added a melodic touch to the event with their captivating Ghuzheng performance. The audience was treated to an array of enchanting tunes, including “Hong Chen Ke Zan,” “Green Porcelain,” “I Will Wait,” “Farewell Love,” “Heart of Lover,” “Flower,” and “Jiangnan.”

The rhythmic beats of Tappu Melam, brought to life by Mr. Satheskumar Mahendran and Vettaikary Tappu Melam JB, enriched the Cultural Day with the rhythmic beats infusing the air with the spirit of India Culture.

Here’s a glimpse of Best Performances categories that left a lasting impression on all attendees:

  1. Zapin – led by Dr. Amos & Psychology Students
  2. Indian Folk Dance – Vivajis and Sasirekha
  3. Lion Dance – Ruhan, Elias, Yuvaraj, Yuvan
  4. Malay Cultural Dance – Dheza, Angeline, Ernee, Tarika
  5. Indian Classical Dance 2 – Dhivya Raman
  6. RU Lecturers Singing – Dr. Pong, Ms. Low See Mei & Ms. Wong

Beyond the cultural performances, delicious stalls offering over 60 delectable dishes and beverages from Malay, Chinese, and Indian cuisines were curated by our talented English for Communication students. This culinary journey allowed attendees to savor the diverse flavors of our cultures. 

Our Cultural Day event served as a platform for community building, where students, faculty, and staff came together to learn about each other’s cultures, fostering a sense of unity and respect within our university community. 

As we reflect on the resounding success of Raffles University Cultural Day 2023, we eagerly look forward to future opportunities to celebrate and promote cultural diversity within our university community. The event, featuring performances from various talented groups and individuals, as well as the winners of the Costume Contest and Best Performances categories, left a lasting impression on all attendees. Cultural Day at Raffles University was a true celebration of diversity, bringing people together to cherish and appreciate the multicultural essence that makes our community so special.
