Zoo Johor Community Service Project

Raffles University Students Put Community Service into Practice at Zoo Johor

Raffles University students stepped beyond the classroom and into the community through a community service project at Zoo Johor, putting teamwork, communication and social responsibility into practice through hands-on volunteering.

Conducted as part of the MPU3412 Community Service module, the project provided students with an opportunity to contribute to the zoo’s daily operations while gaining practical experience through real-world volunteering.

Learning Through Community Service

The project was carried out with the aim of giving back to the community, supporting the daily operations of Zoo Johor and providing students with an opportunity to learn through real-world volunteering.

As part of the activity, students assisted with cleaning and maintaining animal enclosures and improving the surrounding environment. Before carrying out the project, students learned about Zoo Johor and identified the maintenance of clean and healthy animal habitats as an area where they could contribute.

Throughout the activity, students practised teamwork, communication, task allocation and problem-solving. When challenges arose, they worked together to address them and ensure that tasks could be carried out effectively.

The experience provided students with an opportunity to develop practical skills while promoting social responsibility and commitment to the community.

Learning More About Animal Care

The community service activity also provided students with an opportunity to learn more about the animals at Zoo Johor.

While carrying out the cleaning activities, zoo staff shared facts and stories about the animals, adding an educational element to the volunteering experience.

Students also reflected on the importance of communicating with zoo staff before beginning cleaning activities to better understand animal behaviour and identify areas that require greater attention. This can help volunteers avoid actions that may make the animals uncomfortable or scared while allowing the cleaning process to run more smoothly.

Reflecting on the Experience

Reflection formed an important part of the project. Following the activity, students considered both their contributions and areas that could be improved for future community service projects.

One of the practical challenges identified was the availability of cleaning equipment. During the activity, there were not enough rakes and gloves for everyone. Students therefore recommended confirming the planned activities and equipment requirements with zoo staff in advance so that sufficient tools could be prepared and the work carried out more efficiently.

Students also suggested exploring opportunities to participate in other activities in future projects, such as helping to feed the animals or learning about their daily care, provided that these activities are safe and conducted under the guidance of zoo staff.

These reflections highlighted the importance of planning, communication and preparation when organising community service activities.

Supporting the Sustainable Development Goals

The Zoo Johor Community Service Project also aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities and SDG 15: Life on Land.

SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities
The project aligns with SDG 11 through Zoo Johor’s role as an urban green space that educates the public about wildlife conservation. Through their community service activities, students contributed to maintaining and improving the zoo environment.

SDG 15 – Life on Land
The project also aligns with SDG 15 through its focus on maintaining clean and healthy animal habitats. By assisting zoo staff with cleaning and maintaining animal enclosures, students gained practical experience while contributing to the upkeep of the animals’ living environment.

Taking Learning Beyond the Classroom

The Zoo Johor Community Service Project demonstrates how learning can extend beyond the classroom through practical engagement with the community.

Through real-world volunteering, students had the opportunity to develop teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills while strengthening their understanding of social responsibility and community commitment.

The experience reflects the value of community service as part of the students’ learning journey, connecting what they learn with practical experiences and meaningful contributions to the community.
