HandiVerse: A Zine Exhibition of Empathy and Creativity
In an event that aimed to bridge the gap between art and empathy, ‘HandiVerse: A Zine Exhibition held from September 4th to 6th at the Raffles University Atrium, showcased the work of Bachelor of Graphic Design (Honours) and Bachelor of Multimedia Design (Honours) students from Raffles University Arts and Design faculty.
The Zine Artistry:
“Zine” is a small magazine that is produced by one person or a small group of people, and is about a subject they are interested in (Source from Cambridge Dictionary).
The heart of ‘HandiVerse’ was undoubtedly the collection of zines, each meticulously crafted by talented students.
The six Raffles Designers visited the Johor Area Rehabilitation Organisation (JARO) and met with the people there. They then summarized and expressed the conversations, stories, and experiences from their interactions with JARO’s community in each of the zine productions.
These zines were not merely artistic expressions; they served as windows into the personal experiences and journeys of the creators. The students used their art as a powerful medium to raise awareness about the profound impact on individuals and communities
A highlight of the event was the sharing session held on September 5th. During this session, the design students shared the concepts behind their productions, offering deeper insight into their creative process and the personal experiences that fueled their work. It was an opportunity for attendees to connect with the designers, ask questions, and gain a better understanding of the stories behind the art.
The success of ‘HandiVerse’ wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication and creativity of the participating students:
- Chin Yi Hong – Bachelor of Multimedia Design (Honours)
- Teo Yi Sien – Bachelor of Multimedia Design (Honours)
- Michele Lim Mei Yen – Bachelor of Graphic Design (Honours)
- Yashiniyh A/P Selva Raju – Bachelor of Graphic Design (Honours)
- Pee Wei En – Bachelor of Multimedia Design (Honours)
- Lee En Tong – Bachelor of Multimedia Design (Honours)
Taking a Piece of HandiVerse Home:
One notable feature of the exhibition was the opportunity for visitors to own a piece of ‘HandiVerse.’ The portfolios on display were available for purchase, allowing attendees to take home these unique works of art and continue to support the cause. In addition to the HandiVerse Production, a range of merchandise products inspired by the zine designs and final year projects of Bachelor of Graphic Design (Honours) and Diploma in Visual Communication was also available for purchase. By acquiring these products, visitors not only supported budding artists but also contributed to the mission of spreading awareness and fostering empathy.
Their remarkable contributions left a lasting impact on the event and showcased the potential of design to raise awareness and inspire change.
