The Story of "BREAKTHROUGH"

from the 3 young graphic designers

Hi Everyone!

We started working on our final project in Sem May 21, during the time when Movement Control Order (MCO) 3.0 took place. And now, after six months, it is finally a wrap (almost)!

It has not been easy for us to work on our final projects fully online. We were not able to meet each other physically to share our ups and downs during the working process in the last six months. Our mood swings. At the beginning stage, we were quite positive in solving problems and in producing flexible forward planning but most of the times later on, we got frustrated and distracted easily. We should be honest; we did not stay motivated all the time when doing our projects… (but having said that, who can really stay motivated and study hard all the time?)

But we overcame these contextual and personal limitations, eventually. And that was the key reason why we named this showcase as ‘breakthrough’. This period of time marked an important milestone not only for our studies, but also for our personal discovery and growth.

Rather than showing the dynamism, aggressiveness, and loudness and the outcome of breakthrough, we hope to express it in a more implicit and subtle manner and like an on-going process. Sometimes, our breakthrough is small, but we have to self-aware and -acknowledge that it is there. We believe that our original intention of doing something is the source of strengths for all kinds of breakthroughs to happen in our lives, as it can provide us with firm and consistent supports to overcome our limitations and other contextual factors.

We are venturing into an unknown future, and our breakthrough journey will continue…

Presented by Raffles Graphic Designers:
Choong Sin Yie , Kim Da Eun (Dana), and Wong Jing Ning (Joan)

Special Shoutout to Dr WONG Shaw Chiang for guiding the students throughout the project and conducting the showcase.

Designer' Profiles

Designer’s Profile: WONG Jing Ning (Joan)

“I am a dreamer who loves to fill creative and imaginative things in my mind. I am really passionate about design and always working hard to improve myself from time to time.

I think ‘breakthrough’ is like going out from our comfort zone and trying out something new. I experienced a few key breakthroughs in my final project. Originally, I am an introverted person with less impressive public speaking skills. However, I tried to encourage myself to be more confident and speak louder during the critique sessions and presentations. In addition, I volunteered myself to be the final project showcase leader in order to polish my interpersonal skills. I am not perfect, but I am willing to learn”.

Designer’s Profile: KIM Da Eun (Dana)

“I am a designer who always intends to break through my own limitations. I enjoy and have no fear of facing and trying new things.

To me, ‘breakthrough’ means that I have crossed the wall that I thought I couldn’t cross at first. I enjoyed the satisfaction of testing new ideas and going beyond my comfort zone in the past few years at Raffles, and I hope I will continue to enjoy the same things too in the future.

This final project was a huge challenge to me. It is not only a ‘design’ project. I need to understand knowledge from other disciplines such as marketing, economy, psychology and so on in order to complete the project. I experienced my limitations once again in this project and I believe that I have found a breakthrough successfully at the end”.

Designer’s Profile: CHOONG Sin Yie

“I like to explore different styles, ideas and media. I believe that design comes from life and influences our lives. Therefore, I often look for inspiration from the things around me. I think design is limitless and challenging, but I enjoy the process of learning new things from it and hope to become a competent designer.

A breakthrough is a process of overcoming a problem or difficulty. It is not necessarily great, but for yourself, it is the result of your initiative / solution when facing the troubles and the unknown. It is a process of discovering new possibilities.

I am not a tech-savvy person and so I encountered a lot of difficulties in familiarizing myself with design software. In addition, how to digest the skills learnt and integrate them into my ideas to create impactful and appealing visuals are the things that I keep wondering. I am a shy person but in order to improve myself and expand the possibilities of my design, I have to push myself to take the initiative to ask people around me. Perhaps this is considered a small thing to some other people, but it is a meaningful breakthrough to me”
