Eco Chair Fosters Cross-Discipline Sustainability

Pieces to Reminisce: Turning Memories into a Sustainable Chair

Raffles University is excited to participate in the Waste to Wealth Innovation (WAWI) Competition, organised by SW Corp Malaysia. This competition encourages participants to turn waste into wealth by creating innovative, sustainable furniture designs. The team from the Built Environment & Regenerative Design and Fashion Design has developed a concept that beautifully merges sustainability with sentimentality: “Pieces to Reminisce.”

About the Competition:

The Waste to Wealth Innovation (WAWI) Competition is an initiative by Majlis Rekabentuk Malaysia (MRM) in collaboration with various government bodies, tertiary institutions, agencies, industrial companies, and local universities. It aims to support the design industry and foster a new generation of designers by challenging participants to innovate within an eco-friendly theme, specifically in the furniture category for the professional level.

ABOUT THE PROJECT:

Pieces to Reminisce:

The idea behind “Pieces to Reminisce” revolves around transforming unwanted, worn-out clothes into valuable furniture pieces. Clothes often carry sentimental value, representing memories of a time, place, person, or experience. By repurposing these cherished garments, we aim to preserve these memories tangible and beautiful. The design focuses on crafting unique chairs that are not just functional but also deeply personal, each piece capturing the essence of special moments in life.

The chair, crafted from repurposed clothes, serves as a bridge to the past. Each time someone sits on one, they are surrounded by memories and stories, fostering an unconscious connection to those times and the people associated with them. The concept allows these memories to live on in a new form, blending the past with the present creatively and sustainably.  The chair is designed to accommodate three different seating positions: seating, leaning, and meditating, offering both comfort and versatility.

Cross-Discipline Collaboration:

This competition provides an excellent platform for Raffles University to showcase its commitment to sustainability and innovation through cross-disciplinary collaboration. Our lecturers from both Built Environment & Regenerative Design and Fashion Design are working together to bring their diverse skills and perspectives to the table, embodying the spirit of sustainable design.

We are proud of our team’s efforts in promoting sustainability and creativity through this unique project. By participating in this competition, Raffles University continues to lead in innovative design education and sustainable practices. Stay tuned for more updates on our journey in the Waste to Wealth Innovation Competition!
