Bathophobia

Designer: Lim Mei Yi

“Bathophobia” is derived from the Greek “batho” (depth) and “phobos” (fear). Therefore, the silhouette is inspired by traditional Greek clothing. Generally, the ancient Greeks wore simple garments that draped over their bodies with the simple outfits made from one-piece dress without armhole.

It inspired me to create a simple and clean silhouette concept with a ruching element on it. The outfit is designed without the armhole or the sleeves and it are sew together to restrict the movement of the arm to emphasise the feeling of trapped or difficult to move. Furthermore, in order to develop a modif of the creatures, a lot of methods had been used such as cut and paste, enlarge the image and test on the garments.

The ruching technique is used to create the modif of the deep-sea creatures. Ruching is a technique that gathered overlay of fabric strips that are pleated, fluted or gathered together to create a ripple-like or layering.
