Celebrating Sustainability at the IIB World Environment Month Ceremony
莱佛士大学 Medini campus was abuzz with excitement on June 5th, 2024, celebrating the IIB World Environment Month (WEM), held in conjunction with World Environment Day. The event was dedicated to promoting sustainable enhancements through a variety of initiatives, all aimed at fostering sustainable development in Medini. A highlight of the ceremony was the signing of a Collaborative Agreement between Iskandar Investment Berhad (IIB) and 莱佛士大学.
Yang Berhormat Datuk Seri Utama Ir. Hasni Mohammad, Executive Chairman of the Johor Sustainability Centre, also graced the occasion with his presence. Guests included representatives from Iskandar Investment Berhad (IIB), Iskandar Malaysia Youth Sustainability Network (IMYSN), Topflow Sdn.Bhd. and Kelab Alami Nature & Heritage Centre. IIB, as the strategic developer of catalytic projects to stimulate the long-term development of Iskandar Malaysia, plays a pivotal role in promoting a vibrant, resilient circular economy in Iskandar Puteri. Their vision for economic inclusion paves a pathway of opportunities for future generations. Kelab Alami runs environmental education programmes for the youth of Mukim Tanjung Kupang, training local citizen scientists to observe, document, and monitor their natural habitats, empowering young people to take ownership of their environment.
莱佛士大学‘s Faculty of AI and Robotics students exhibited their project, “Classification of Garbage,” presented by Tan Yi Ze, Chen Long, Tan Xin Fei from Bachelor of Information System(Honours) In Artificial Intelligence and Vikneshwaran Murugaian from Bachelor of Information Technology(Honours). This innovative project uses machine learning algorithms to classify different types of waste materials, aiming to improve the efficiency of recycling processes. By accurately identifying and sorting garbage, the system reduces human error and increases the purity of recycled materials.
Additionally, the Faculty of Arts and Design showcased their innovative projects, emphasising sustainability and upcycling: Recycle -designed by Cheok Xin Ya from 服装设计大专文凭 , Collection Ecoocean. Sea animals often mistake transparent plastic bags for jellyfish, leading to ingestion and harm. This project aims to raise public awareness about the dangers of careless rubbish disposal. Utilising plastic bottles as embellishments, the designs create interesting textures and shapes, highlighting the responsibility to protect the ocean and its ecology. Upcycling Project Workshop designed by Kok Haozhe, Tai Wen Jie, and Wong Jing Harn from 服装设计学士(荣誉学位). Upcycling involves transforming by-products, waste, or disused materials into new, higher-quality items. By repurposing existing materials, this project saves energy, water, chemicals, and other resources needed for new virgin materials. The fashion pieces use deadstock fabric, vintage clothing, and other unused or waste materials to create valuable, stylish garments.
莱佛士大学 has been at the forefront of promoting sustainable practices across its campus and curricula. We integrates sustainability into its educational programs, encouraging students to incorporate eco-friendly principles in students’ projects. 莱佛士大学 also actively participates in community outreach programmes, such as beach cleanups and tree planting initiatives, fostering a culture of environmental stewardship among students and staffs.
