COMMUNITY PROJECT

A few Raffles Fashion Designers from Bachelor of Fashion Design (Honours) were involved in this community project during MCO to produce and donate a total of 1275 pieces of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to a few local hospitals, including Hospital Kulai, Bomba Kulai, Pejabat Kesihatan Daerah Kulai, Hospital Sultanah Aminah (HSA) Makmal Kesihatan Awam (MKA), Hospital Sultan Ismail (HSI) and Hospital Muar.

Vivian CHONG, a Raffles Alumni from Bachelor of Supply Chain Management (Honours) and her working team initiated this community project after received information from the local hospitals regarding the shortage of PPE. With an aim to support the healthcare workers who upheld their positions at the frontline to fight with the Covid-19 for us, her team decided to establish a community team with volunteers from public and university to produce and donate the PPE for the frontline healthcare workers. 

Our Current Raffles Fashion Designers voluntary participated in the production of the PPE in this community project. The students were responsible to sew the PPE. Each of the students was involved in 100 pieces of gowns.

Let us hear about their thoughts after participating in these meaningful activities.

Vivian CHONG Sin Win: “This is an unforgettable memory in my life because I know that frontliner are brave to fighting and bear risk in the first stage for our country, I appreciate and thanks for them. Besides, I feel thanks for all people or departments who join this program, especially for fashion students, Gally Chan, Cai Qing, Zi Qing and Afiqah who volunteering to spend time to sew PPE even they having online class, final year project or internship at the same time. I wish their kindness action will be appreciated and model for others.”

TEO Cai Qing: “I am very happy to make the PPE for health worker, we are all doing what we can. As a fashion student, this is the most meaningful project for me, when sewing can protect someone’s life.”

WONG Ziqing: “I feel rejoice because I can join this project by contributing my effort to society through sewing the PPE. When I realise that the front-line medical staffs have to work overtime and work tirelessly to take care of the patients, I really hope that my little contribution can help them in some way. So, I feel glad to join the project.”

Nur Afiqah Binti ISMAIL: “I am very honoured to help the hospital staffs, especially during this pandemic. It is a crucial and sad time for everyone and I am very glad that I have joined this project. Even though we are only sewing PPE clothes, it feels good to know that it is used to fight the Covid19 and to cater to people who are suffering from Covid19. I hope my small contribution will push them even more!”

Gally CHAN Chiaa Wei: “By joining this project, I feel happy and have a sense of accomplishment as I know that I am able to help those frontliners who have been working tirelessly ever since the COVID 19 pandemic started. They are the ones who bravely fight with the virus face to face when us, the rest of the citizens, are staying at home, trying to avoid this virus. I admire their courage to help and save our country even if their lives are at stake. Once I heard that they are in shortage of PPE, I decided to join to assist them to sew the PPE. As a fashion design student, this is the least that I can help them compared to what they have sacrificed for us. Why not make use of the skills we are best at, to help those who are in need?”

We would like to appreciate our students’ efforts in volunteering in the meaningful community project during the MCO period. In fact, some of these students were in online classes or internship when they were involved in this programme.

We also appreciate the related departments for the opportunity to enable our students to participate in this community project.

We would also express our thankfulness to our frontline healthcare worker.
