Empowering Students Through Meaningful Community Outreach
As part of the MPU3412 Community Service subject, students actively engaged in community-based outreach initiatives designed to foster social responsibility, empathy, and practical skills beyond the classroom. Under this subject, students were divided into different outreach projects, each addressing unique community needs while applying teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving in real-world contexts.

Group 1 focused on an educational and welfare-based outreach through a Community Service Workshop with Sekola Baroka, BandoKita in Johor Bahru. The initiative was conducted in a workshop format, beginning with ice-breaking sessions to build rapport with the children.
In a subsequent session, students distributed food items and donated clothing, as well as T-shirts crafted and designed by the children with guidance from the students. Throughout the outreach, students practised clear communication, active listening, teamwork coordination, and effective interaction with children, agency representatives, and fellow team members.
They applied transformational leadership by managing group dynamics, guiding children calmly, and maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment. Challenges such as engagement issues, attention span differences, language barriers, conflict management, and limited resources were addressed through flexible and practical solutions.
The MPU3412 Community Service subject provided group 1 students with meaningful opportunities to apply academic knowledge in real community settings. Through diverse outreach initiatives, students strengthened their understanding of corporate social responsibility (CSR), project execution, and community impact, while developing essential soft skills that prepare them to become socially conscious and responsible graduates.

Group 2 carried out a community service and fundraising initiative in collaboration with Cat Tiram Shelter in Ulu Tiram, Johor Bahru. In preparation for Volunteer Day on 25 October 2025, group 2 students organised a three-day fundraising booth selling cat-themed merchandise such as stickers, keychains, postcards, and digital portraits.
To raise public awareness, they also created a digital storybook and promotional posters highlighting animal welfare issues.
During the shelter visit, group 2 students participated in hands-on volunteering by cleaning indoor and outdoor areas, maintaining cat trees and furniture, and assisting with shelter upkeep. They also practised problem solving when facing challenges such as limited water supply and safely handling cats during cleaning activities, gaining valuable experience in fundraising, event planning, and community engagement.
