Field Trip to Mearks

Begin a Journey of Supply Chain with Maersk

[20 July 2023]

At 莱佛士大学’s, we believe in providing our Raffles students with practical, real-world experiences that enrich their academic journey and broaden their horizons. Such opportunities not only impart supply chain knowledge but also ignite a passion for learning. One such remarkable supply chain field trip took place on July 20, 2023, when 8 students from 供应链管理学士(荣誉学位), led by Mr Melvin Long, the programme director of Supply Chain embarked on an unforgettable supply chain field trip to Maersk. They were invited by Maersk to have a firsthand experience behind the scenes of a series of operations processes, from vessel clearances to the coordination of marine and logistics equipment, as well as container stowage planning. The analytical tools deployed, along with an experienced workforce, keep the goods moving in and out seamlessly 24/7.

Maersk Group has grown into a $50 billion company with locations in 130 countries and business lines that include shipping, containers, energy, retail, and other related sectors, offering fully integrated supply chain options with green solutions. Advances in technology have also made shipping an increasingly efficient and preferable mode of transport. The Maersk Operations Team introduce our students on how things work at PTP.  Students compete in teams on a real-life case study provided and brainstorm innovative solutions. They used their creative ideas to find solutions that could really be implemented in industry.

Connectivity and accessibility in transportation management are key pillars for global integration, serving as drivers to maintain robust economies around the world. According to UNCTAD, over 80% of the volume of international trade in goods is carried by sea. The eight (8) students from Supply Chain had a rare opportunity to be invited on-board a Triple E Vessel by Maersk. “Triple E” is derived from the class’s three design principles: “Economy of scale, Energy efficiency, and Environmental impact improvement.”

The Munkebo Maersk vessel that the students visited is a Container Ship sailing under the flag of Denmark, with a carrying capacity of almost 19,000 TEU. Its length overall (LOA) is 399.2 meters, and its width is 60 meters. The vessel’s service routes are between Europe and Asia. The Triple E design helped Maersk win the “Most Sustainable Ship Operator of the Year” award in July 2011.

The Captain and the Crew of the vessel briefed and demonstrated complex functional tasks and responsibilities of the crew members and their day-to-day operations on board. We thank the Captain and the crew for their very inspiring session, and we wish them Fair Winds & Following Seas!

This field trip crystallized the importance of this industry, allowing our students to witness firsthand the inner workings that keep the world moving. Raffles University extends its heartfelt thanks to the Maersk team for their dedication and for making this field a resounding success!
