ACCREDITATION OF PRIOR EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING (APEL)

In 2024, Raffles University established the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) Centre to support continuous professional development. This initiative addresses the escalating need for lifelong learning in an evolving job market by providing a structured pathway for adult learners to gain formal recognition for their prior experiential learning. The APEL Centre allows professionals to convert their work experience or informal learning into academic credits, bridging the gap between practical experience and formal education.

The establishment of the APEL Centre aligns with Raffles University’s goal towards FutureU through continuous professional development. Through this initiative, Raffles University reaffirms its dedication to fostering an inclusive and flexible educational environment.

APEL. C

is a formal assessment process that evaluates non-formal and informal learning — such as work experience, short courses, self-learning (e.g. MOOCs), or life experience — for credit transfer within an accredited academic programme, allowing you to reduce your study load, save on tuition fees, and graduate faster.

  1. It is vital for applicants to understand that APEL.C is not an easy shortcut to obtaining academic credits. The process requires a rigorous demonstration of actual learning. Applicants should also be aware that failure to meet the required standards may result in serious consequences.
  2. To avoid unnecessary disappointment and unsuccessful applications, it is important for applicants to be informed that they are not eligible to apply for courses they have already taken, failed, or that fall under final year projects. Additionally, each course is only eligible for one application attempt.
APEL. C Criteria
  • Enrolled in an accredited programme
  • Relevant prior experiential learning matching programme outcomes
  • Programme must not be previously taken, failed, or currently enrolled
  • Positive recommendation from appointed APEL(C) Advisor
  • Minimum 50% achievement in each programme outcome required
  • Able to pay application and assessment fees
  • Complete self-assessment and submit 500-word learning report

APEL.A, which stands for APEL for Access, is used to gain entry into a programme of study based on your prior experiential learning, while APEL.C, or APEL for Credit Award, allows you to receive credit transfers for specific courses within a programme you’re already enrolled in. Essentially, APEL.A helps you get into the programme, while APEL.C helps you skip courses you have already mastered through experience.

You can apply for APEL.C at any time during your studies, though it is recommended to submit your application during your first year of study for maximum benefit. However, you cannot apply for courses you have already registered for, completed, or are currently taking, nor can you apply for final year projects, dissertations, or courses you have previously failed and need to repeat.

APEL.C recognises learning gained from various sources including work experience and professional practice, short courses and workshops, professional development programmes, Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), self-directed learning and independent study, volunteer work and community involvement, as well as professional certifications and training programmes. It is important to remember that the assessment focuses on the learning you have gained from these experiences, not just the experiences themselves.

There are two main assessment methods available for APEL.C. The Challenge Test is a proctored examination that can be written, oral, or performance-based, and it works best for subjects with clear, testable knowledge such as Accounting, Mathematics, or Languages. The Portfolio method involves creating a comprehensive document with evidence and learning statements mapped to course learning outcomes, which is more suitable for experiential, creative, or applied subjects like Management, Marketing, or Creative Arts. Your appointed APEL.C Advisor will help you choose the most appropriate method based on the nature of the course and your educational background, and you must achieve at least 50% in each course learning outcome regardless of which method you choose.

If you fail the APEL.C assessment, you cannot switch to the other assessment method for the same course, nor can you re-attempt the assessment for that particular course through APEL.C. Instead, you must complete the course through regular enrollment in your programme of study. However, you can still apply for APEL.C for other courses in your programme, and you have the right to appeal the decision through your institution’s established appeal process with a different assessor reviewing your case.

APEL.C credits will appear as “CT(APEL)” on your official transcript and will count towards your total graduation credit requirements, but they will not affect your GPA or CGPA calculations. Additionally, you will receive a Malaysian Qualification Statement (MQS) as supplementary documentation to accompany your transcript. This means you can graduate faster with fewer courses to complete, but your GPA will be based only on the courses you actually attended and completed through regular study.
Within the same institution, APEL.C credits can automatically transfer to another programme if the course has the same learning outcomes as the one for which you received credit. However, transferring these credits to other institutions depends entirely on the receiving institution’s policies and is not guaranteed. International recognition of APEL.C credits may also vary by country and institution, so it IS advisable to check with your target institution before applying for APEL.C if you plan to transfer in the future.
