Raffles University’s English Language Programme has been designed to help those students who have not yet achieved the necessary English proficiency level required to join one of the Raffles University Iskandar programmes. This course helps in the development of listening, reading, writing and speaking skills, with emphasis given to academic English.
During the course, students will not only improve a daily command of the language, but also develop their critical reading and writing skills with the use of a variety of texts, including novels for young adults, short stories, newspapers, magazine articles and letters. This practice creates a strong foundation for their academic English.
Students will also be given writing tasks and learn how to develop their ideas through essays, reports, emails and letters. Classroom interaction is highly encouraged and students participate in many listening and speaking activities. During the course, they become increasingly proficient in delivering oral presentations and using visual aids to deliver a message.
In Reading and Writing, students gradually develop their ability, from simply understanding and comprehending newspaper or magazine articles, to following main ideas and picking out important details in such texts. This increased understanding of written texts and a developing grasp of new vocabulary words will enable students to perform writing tasks suited to the specific purposes of the course.
At this level, students will work towards composing grammatically correct sentences, and by the end of the semester, a paragraph ranging from 150-250 words. Although sentence structures may likely be weak, and there may be errors in syntax, spelling, and punctuation, the students should be able to convey their main idea clearly in a single paragraph.
In communication, students will develop their speaking and listening skills in a variety of social and academic situations. They will become increasingly proficient in delivering oral presentations in a classroom setting and in effectively using a variety of visual aids to enhance their delivery and message. Speakers will communicate on matters relating to a variety of academic and/or social events, and listeners will be able to identify topics and specific details in a variety of conversations, lectures and/or class presentations.
A pass in Foundation English meets the English Language requirement for Raffles University Diploma programmes.

RU has provided me with a good environment to enhance my learning process and the opportunity to learn a lot of things which are helpful for my future. What I like the most about my lecturers is that they are full of experience and very patient in sharing their knowledge with us. I have grow through my experiences here and have learnt to become a more confident person.
I entered Raffles University with the Foundation in Business programme and proceeded to the Bachelor of Business Administration (Honours) course. My four years at Raffles University were among the best years of my life. When I reflect on the four year programme, I conclude that it wasn’t a piece of cake. There are lots of “brussel sprouts” to get through but by following Raffles’ recipe, I am cultivated with tools to jumpstart and refine the unpredictable future of my career. All I can say is that when I first set out on this journey, I was an entirely different person from what I have become now as Raffles presented an opportunity for me to grow on both a personal and professional level.
My journey at Raffles started with the Foundation in Liberal Arts programme and later followed by the Bachelor of Psychology. Over the years enrolled in Raffles’ programs, I was lucky to have been exposed to many experiences that I believe were exceptional. Foundation in Liberal Arts formed a strong backbone for my tertiary education. I have seen myself grow both personally and academically at Raffles University, and I am forever grateful for that.
