When studying human behaviour, academic papers and textbooks only paint part of the picture. To truly understand concepts like human dignity, rehabilitation, and systemic justice, students must step out of the lecture hall and into the real world.

Recently, Dr Shuba led Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) and Diploma in Psychology students from Raffles University on an immersive field trip to Kota Jail. Organised as an experiential learning initiative, the visit complemented key topics covered in two core modules: Professional Ethics and Conduct in Psychology and Psychology of Adolescence and Adulthood.

Bridging Theory and Social Reality

The primary goal of the visit was to help students grasp the historical and social realities of imprisonment while critically examining the ethical framework surrounding the criminal justice system.

Walking through the facility allowed students to reflect on essential questions:

Human Dignity & Rights: How does the justice system balance disciplinary measures with fundamental human rights?

Ethical Considerations: What role do mental health professionals play in advocating for fairness, respect, and proper care within correctional facilities?

Rehabilitation vs. Punishment: How can psychological theories on human development and adulthood inform more effective rehabilitation strategies?

Unfiltered Insights: A Conversation with a Former Prisoner

While exploring the grounds provided vital context, the highlight of the trip was an exclusive Q&A session with a former prisoner.

In a candid and open account, he shared his personal trajectory, the mental and emotional realities of life behind bars, and the ongoing obstacles individuals face when attempting to reintegrate into society after release. For the students, hearing directly from someone with lived experience transformed theoretical concepts of rehabilitation and social stigma into a vivid, human reality.

“Learning directly from someone who has lived through the system pushes students beyond textbook knowledge. It forces them to confront real-world nuances, exercise true empathy, and think critically about their future roles as ethical practitioners.”

Cultivating Ethical and Empathetic Future Professionals

At Raffles University, experiential learning is a cornerstone of our academic philosophy. By connecting classroom lectures on ethics and adult development with practical, real-world engagement, our Degree and Diploma students gain a well-rounded perspective that prepares them for impactful careers in psychology, counselling, and social services.

We extend our sincere gratitude to Kota Jail and Dr Shuba for facilitating this eye-opening learning experience.
