Raffles Graphic Designer from\u00a0\u5e73\u9762\u8bbe\u8ba1\u5b66\u58eb\uff08\u8363\u8a89\u5b66\u4f4d\uff09<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 TAN Shu Xian (Behance: @ShuXianTan)\u00a0<\/strong>held a\u00a0LIVE Book Launching<\/strong>\u00a0on\u00a0Raffles University\u2019s official Facebook (@Raffles.University.Iskandar)<\/a><\/strong>. Her portfolio title was: RUO JI RUO LI \uff08\u82e5\u5373\u82e5\u79bb\uff09- So Close, So Far.<\/p>

The event was moderated by\u00a0Dr TAN Wee Chuen<\/strong>, the Campus Dean of Raffles University. The module is guided by\u00a0Mr WONG Shaw Chiang<\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

RUO JI RUO LI<\/strong>\u00a0is the publication created, authored and designed by the graphic designer \u2013\u00a0TAN Shu Xian<\/strong>. RUO JI RUO LI is the Chinese pinyin of the words\u00a0\u201c\u82e5\u5373\u82e5\u79bb\u201d<\/strong>. It means \u201cSo close, so far\u201d in English. The book aims to\u00a0investigate and illustrate the relationship between Shu Xian\u2019s mother and her grandmother and to assist her mum to interstate and clarify a \u2018doubt\u2019 that has long been kept in her heart.<\/span><\/p>

The story of the book is\u00a0ordinary and personal but very sentimental and inspiring.<\/em>\u00a0The flow of the content is designed as an autobiography of her mother since she was born. The book describes and illustrates the life event that has been gone through by her mother, and to investigates the relationship between the mother and the grandmother. To further analyse the whole story, Shu Xian also interviewed her relatives for this project to furnish the book.<\/span><\/p>

The book aims to bring positivity to the public.\u00a0 The first impression of the story in the publication might be negative due to the involvement of social issue such as the bias of male child in a traditional culture, suicide due to worst relationship and how the core family education might affect the thought of the children. Yet,\u00a0positivity awareness is raised through the ways and mindsets of how Shu Xian\u2019s mother deals with all the issues in her life since she was young.<\/span><\/p>

The design of the book is also meaningful. Shu Xian incorporates many memorable photos of her mum and family member in this book with solid colour shapes. The book is tied with a red thread that indicates the bonding as the family relationship despite not being close. The designer also uses the alphabet spacing to illustrate the distance of \u201cso far yet so close. Besides, the designer includes the \u201cinside pages\u201d as the messages she wants to tell her mum.<\/p>

Interesting fact: Since these photos were taken 20-30 years ago and kept in some corner of the house, Shu Xian managed to scan the photos into the computer before the photos are damaged by termites.\u00a0 The book then becomes more valuable for her and her family.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The publication launching session will mark the end of Shu Xian\u2019s Degree studies in Bachelor of Graphic Design (Honours) at Raffles University. It is indeed meaningful to create such a valuable and memorable publication for her family member with the skills of graphic design she has learned in the prorgamme.<\/p>
